PASS THE BIG BOX BILL CAMPAIGN

Late in 2006, Kauai’s small, independent businesses were threatened by the emergence of big box retailers on Kauai (population 60,000). Fujita & Miura Public Relations was hired to develop a PR plan to assist these local businesses to pass a bill that limited the amount of floor space a retailer or wholesaler could occupy. The primary purpose of the bill was to preserve Kauai’s rural character and lifestyle and prevent adverse community impacts. This measure quickly became known as the Big Box Bill. The campaign, which was implemented over a six-month period, resulted in the Big Box Bill being passed through the Kauai County Planning Commission, passed unanimously by the Kauai County Council, and then signed into law by the Mayor of Kauai. Now, this highly successful PR plan, along with the accompanying testimony templates, ally emails, County Council bill, t-shirt and bumper sticker layouts, and more, as well as ten hours of consulting, is available to purchase. This investment will yield the possibility of a timeless and priceless legacy for local communities facing threats from big box retailers.
